Convert your data: Indexes and ratios (part one)

Selecting transcript lines in this section will navigate to timestamp in the vide Data conversion is the conversion of computer data from one format to another. Throughout a computer environment, data is encoded in a variety of ways. For example, computer hardware is built on the basis of certain standards, which requires that data contains, for example, parity bit checks. Similarly, the operating system is predicated on certain standards for data and file handling. Furthermore, each computer program handles data in a different manner. Whenever any one of these variables is changed, data must be converted in some way before it can be used by a different computer, operating system or program.  Even different versions of these elements usually involve different data structures. For example, the changing of bits from one format to another, usually for the purpose of application interoperability or of capability of using new features, is merely a data conversion. Data conversions may b...

Conditional structures - Loops - Classes

One of the fairly common scenarios you'll run into in programming is making decisions. Your program needs to compare values and execute code based upon some logical outcome. And that's where conditional logic comes into play. In Python, conditionals are handled by the "if", "elif", "else" statement. - Repeating code over and over again, via a construct known as a loop, is also a fairly common scenario in programming. Python provides a couple of ways of doing that. Loops in Python work a little bit differently than you might be used to in other languages. For example, in JavaScript you have the concept of an index counter, that controls the number of iterations in a for loop. Alright, that's a brief look at loops in Python. - Just like other languages, such as JavaScript, Python gives you the option of writing code that is procedural or objected oriented. So, that you can use classes in Python. Classes are a really great way of encapsulating fu...

When to go interactive

So I want to discuss  when you might think about ticking things  and going interactive.  And listen, the spoiler alert on this one is,  my answer is kind of, always, sort of.  If you can,  if you have the time and the budget  to make interactive things, you should.  So that's the short answer, but here's the longer answer.  I like to start off this way.  How did you learn to count?  When I was a little kid, I learned using these,  they're called Montessori counting beads.  And so when I was three years old,  someone handed me three of those little beads  in the upper-left-hand corner and said, that's three.  And that's not that weird.  Everybody learns to count that way probably with blocks  or something like that.  But then they handed me this single-wired together object  in the far-upper-right and said, that's 10.  Then they handed me the flat object in front of those ...
