When to go interactive

  So I want to discuss  when you might think about ticking things  and going interactive.  And listen, the spoiler alert on this one is,  my answer is kind of, always, sort of.  If you can,  if you have the time and the budget  to make interactive things, you should.  So that's the short answer, but here's the longer answer.  I like to start off this way.  How did you learn to count?  When I was a little kid, I learned using these,  they're called Montessori counting beads.  And so when I was three years old,  someone handed me three of those little beads  in the upper-left-hand corner and said, that's three.  And that's not that weird.  Everybody learns to count that way probably with blocks  or something like that.  But then they handed me this single-wired together object  in the far-upper-right and said, that's 10.  Then they handed me the flat object in front of those ...

Keys and unique values

 When information is stored in a database, we'll usually want to read or access that data, or part of it, for some particular purpose. Let's say we want to look up a customer's phone number so we can call them about their upcoming reservation. In a table of a few hundred customers, we might have customer names and their phone numbers, and it's pretty simple to ask the database for a customer's information. We could say, give me the record for Taylor Jenkins, and the database would return their row. But what happens when two people have the same name? That's a fairly common problem when dealing with names. If we were to ask the database to give us records matching a name that's shared by a few customers, we'd get back all the records that match.  So how do we know which is the correct customer? My first Python program

It's time to start writing some actual Python code. If you're on a Mac or Linux, it might be Python3 for you, so on windows it's just Python and just refer to the docs for your installation on the right command there. So I'm going to hit Enter, and when I execute the Python command just by itself, this places me into Python's interpreted mode.   So Python, like JavaScript, is an interpreted language, in other words, it's not like Java or C or C++, the application does not need to be compiled and built into an executable before you can run it. The Python interpreter simply takes each line of code as it comes across it and interprets and execute it.  And in this case, it's simply taking the numerical expression two plus two, evaluating it and you can see it comes back with four.
